Purpose:
This report is designed to be an educational, bargaining tool. It is so complete that it will give you the competitive edge in todays diamond market. This general guideline is based upon the actual cost that the average retail jeweler pays for the diamonds that they sell for diamonds similar to those described herein. It will provide you with a better idea of what a fair starting point might be for negotiating the best possible price on a diamond from your jeweler.
Basis For Prices Contained In This Report:
The prices listed below are based on our purchasing experience and opinion of the current CASH ASKING PRICE for finished diamonds being sold on the world market at a wholesale level to the retail trade. The actual cost of a diamond may be significantly higher or lower than the prices listed herein due to fluctuations in the world diamond market and the individual circumstances that apply to each transaction. No guarantees written or verbal are made and no liabilities are assumed as to the validity or accuracy of the information contained herein. Jewelry stores who buy diamonds on credit or "memo" will usually pay slightly higher prices than those stated in this report and jewelry stores making bulk diamond purchases will usually benefit from substantial discounts. While every precaution has been made to prevent them, we are not responsible for typographical errors or omissions. If you notice anything that seems incorrect, please notify us immediately.
How To Use This Report:
Simply look up the weight, clarity, and color of the diamond on our list and see its approximate cost range. By knowing approximately what your jeweler paid for the diamond you seek, you can negotiate from a position of educated strength. We suggest that you begin negotiating at least 10 - 15% higher than the prices listed below and feel that you would be doing exceptionally well to secure a diamond at 30% above the prices listed below.
Keep in mind that these prices are our estimate of absolute "Hard Cost" and do not take into consideration the expenses of operating a business, such as: retail store or office space, including gross percentage lease; local, state, and federal licenses; utility costs; manufacturing equipment, tools, and fees; supplies; employee salaries and benefits; liability and theft insurance; advertising; transportation, handling, and insurance costs for every diamond shipped to his store or back to his supplier, etc. Be reasonable in your expectations when negotiating a price, take into account the jewelers overhead when you make an offer. It is estimated that overhead and expenses account for approximately 30 - 50% of a jewelry stores gross sales.
Diamond Specifications Used In This Report:
All prices listed below are based upon our purchasing experience and opinion of the current CASH ASKING PRICE for finished diamonds that have been graded by reputable independent gemological laboratories such as, but certainly not limited to:
| GIA - GTL | Gemological Institute of America Gem Trade Laboratory |
| AGSL | American Gem Society Laboratory |
| EGL | European Gemological Laboratory |
| Zenhokyo | Zenhokyo Gemological Laboratories - Japan / Antwerp |
| HRD | Laboratory for the Belgium Diamond Council |
| CGL | Central Gemological Laboratories - Japan / Antwerp |
Prices listed below are for LAB GRADED DIAMONDS ONLY. Diamonds that are not lab graded should cost less and may not be accurately graded. For your protection, we STRONGLY suggest that you consult with an Independent GIA Graduate Gemologist or AGS Certified Gemologist before purchasing any diamond that has not been lab graded to prevent buying a poorly cut, treated, or misrepresented diamond. An "Independent Gemologist" is one that works independent of a jewelry store or brokerage thereby being neutral to the outcome of their findings... Where do independent Gemologists hide you ask... In the telephone book of course... Let your fingers do the walking or review the list of Independent GIA Graduate Gemologist Appraisers on our web site at http://www.niceice.com/appraisers.htm or if all else fails, give the AGS a call @ (702) 255-6500 and ask them for a referral to an independent gemological appraiser in your area... Note, a "Jewelry Appraiser" is not necessarily a Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) or a Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA)... Any store, jeweler, pawn shop owner, etc. can "appraise" jewelry as an appraisal is essentially the opinion of the appraiser based on their interpretation of the items characteristics and may not necessarily be based on standard gemological practices using specialized gemological equipment. It is also important to realize that not all lab graded diamonds are necessarily of good quality. A diamond grading report issued by an independent gemological laboratory such as the GIA or AGS is merely an evaluation of the diamonds characteristics as determined by an expert diamond grader at the time the diamond was inspected. Be wary of diamond grading reports older than three years and "in-house" diamond grading reports which have been issued by the company selling the diamond... Duh...
Diamond prices listed are based on diamonds that fall within the specifications set forth by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as being within "Ideal Range" as specified in the table below. The term "Ideal Range" encompasses a broad spectrum of diamonds and is not to be confused with the more precise guidelines set forth by the American Gemological Society (AGS) for finer cuts such as the "AGS-0 IDEAL CUT"; "AGS-1 Excellent"; and "AGS-2 Very Good" cuts which should cost significantly more (10 - 25%+). Diamonds certified as having "Very Good" or "Excellent" Polish & Symmetry may also cost 10 - 25% more regardless of their proportions. Likewise, diamonds with proportions, polish, and/or symmetry ratings of Fair or Poor may be discounted as much as 40% below these prices... And you wondered how those mass merchandisers and warehouse clubs could offer such substantial discounts! Thats right, we want you to go back to the site and read some more... Specifically, this time your focus should be on cut and proportions as detailed on our site http://www.niceice.com/cut.htm Remember: the precision of a diamonds proportions, combined with the quality of its polish and symmetry control 98% of its brilliance and price... Your focus should be on the quality of a diamonds cut first and foremost, with color, clarity, and carat weight in that order.

| Clarity Enhancement / Fracture Filling | None |
| Color Enhancement | None |
*Effects of Fluorescence Upon The Market Price of a Diamond:
Fluorescence can have a dramatic effect on the market price of a diamond depending on the degree to which it effects the diamond. For instance, Very Strong or Distinct Fluorescence in a diamond with D color and VVS clarity can reduce the price of the diamond as much as 10 - 15%. Lower clarities and colors with the same degree of fluorescence would not be subject to the same discounts. For instance, a diamond graded as D color and VS clarity with Very Strong or Distinct Fluorescence may only be discounted 6 - 10% and an SI or Imperfect with the same degree of fluorescence as little as 4% if at all. Diamonds with lower colors, such as K-L-M may actually be increased in price 2 - 4% depending on the degree of fluorescence. Fluorescence ratings of Faint to Medium have very little effect on the selling price of a diamond with the discount being more around 1 - 3% for diamonds in the D/E color range with the presence of fluorescence adding a 1 - 3% premium on diamonds in the G+ color ranges. Strong blue fluorescence tends to discount 4 - 5% in the D/E color range and fetch the same premium in G+ colors... According to the GIA, fewer than 2% of all Gem Quality Diamonds are negatively effected by the presence of fluorescence and most of those diamonds have a fluorescence rating of Strong to Distinct. If you feel that fluorescence in a diamond is negatively effecting its beauty, ask for a discount. If the fluorescence enhances the diamonds beauty, be prepared to pay a little extra for it.
These Are Not Price Per Carat Prices!
These are not price-per-carat (PPC) estimates that require extensive calculations in order to determine the price of a diamond. Weve done all of the work for you. All you have to do is scan down the list to locate the size, color, and clarity of the diamond youre looking at and youll instantly know approximately what Mr. Jeweler paid for it (not including shipping and insurance costs). Remember to add a little bit for better proportions, polish and symmetry... and to take a little off for poorer cuts, heavy fluorescence, chips, treatments, etc.
