The proportions of a diamond control 98% of the light
return. If you want a diamond that is brilliant, dispersive, and which
exhibits a high degree of scintillation, searching for a diamond with ideal cut
proportions is a good place to start. For our purposes, the term
"ideal cut diamond" refers to any diamond with proportions that fall
within the guidelines set forth by the American Gem Society Laboratory
(AGS). Ideal cut diamond proportions defined.
The term "Ideal Cut" is largely misused and misunderstood by
the diamond industry... The purpose of this page is to clarify our use of
the term "ideal" as it is used on this site and within our Private
Reserve inventory listing.
The term "Ideal Cut" as used in our Private Reserve and on this site,
refers to any round brilliant cut diamond that has ideal cut proportions as
determined by either the American Gem Society Laboratory™ or our own Sarin
DiaPort computerized proportions analysis. In addition, Polish and
Symmetry ratings must be GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal for us to consider a diamond
to be "Ideal Cut". We do not consider diamonds graded by the GIA or AGS as
having Very Good or Good polish and symmetry to be "Ideal Cut Diamonds"...
"GIA-0XX" as used on our Private Reserve represents a diamond graded by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory
as having Excellent polish and symmetry AND which received a zero ideal cut
rating during Sarin DiaPort or DiaMension computerized proportions analysis.
"Excellent" is the highest polish and symmetry grade available from
the GIA Laboratory and is extremely difficult to achieve.
"AGS Ideal 0" as used on our Private Reserve represents a diamond graded by the AGS Laboratory as
having "AGS Ideal" polish, symmetry, and proportions... This
would result in an overall "Cut Grade" rating of "AGS Ideal
0" by the AGS Laboratory as seen on their Diamond Quality Document [DQD].
"AGS Ideal" is the highest rating available from the AGS Laboratory.
Members of the diamond trade generally refer to such diamonds by the slang terms
"AGS triple zero" or "AGS-000 Ideal Cut"...
It is important to note that the AGS parameters for the ideal cut proportions
rating is the tightest in the industry and is different than "European
Ideal" which allows for broader proportions. Many "Tolkowsky
Cut" and "European Ideal Cut" diamonds will register as low as
AGS-2 Very Good on the AGS Proportions Scale. If a diamond is listed as
"GIA-0XX" or "AGS Ideal 0" in our Private Reserve, it is a
true Ideal Cut Diamond which has been carefully hand selected for its incredible brilliance and
dispersion. We guarantee it.
