Hearts & Arrows is a term used to describe a crisp and complete pattern of hearts and arrows that can be viewed in an unmounted diamond using a special piece of equipment called a Gems Fantasy Scope. From the top view, a pattern of eight symmetrical arrows will be visible in a star pattern... From the bottom view a pattern of eight symmetrical hearts will be visible through the Gems Fantasy Scope... Hearts & Arrows diamonds were originally designed by the Japanese and were not available on the world market until several years ago when the Yen collapsed. Many variations in the quality of pattern exhibited in diamonds represented as being Hearts & Arrows appear on the market. Because of the variation in Hearts & Arrows patterns available, we grade the pattern of hearts and arrows based on a grading system developed by the independent gemological laboratories operating in Japan who are experienced in grading the patterns of hearts and arrows. Essentially our grading system is based on their grading system for hearts and arrows. A photograph of the hearts and arrows pattern appearing within each diamond in our inventory is available for your review via a direct link that appears on our Private Reserve listing where applicable. Note that many of the diamonds listed as AGS Ideal 0 or GIA-XX0 exhibit partial patterns of hearts and arrows, but may not be represented as a Hearts & Arrows Diamond because of variations in the pattern that cause us not to grade the diamond as Hearts & Arrows. Not all diamonds exhibiting a pattern of hearts and arrows have a pattern of hearts and arrows that is complete or crisp enough to meet strict Japanese standards for what constitutes a Hearts & Arrows diamond.
