The
pattern of eight stars seen through the top of many round brilliant ideal cut
diamonds is actually a reflection of the eight pavilion main facets that are
found on the bottom or pavilion side of the diamond... The pattern
of eight stars is not visible in all round brilliant cut diamonds because of
variations in the crown and pavilion angles of the diamond. Better cut
ideal cut diamonds exhibit the pattern of eight stars and sometimes this pattern
can be seen with the naked eye... It's kind of cool! The pattern of
eight stars is more visible in larger diamonds simply because the viewing area
is larger, the pattern of eight stars may be seen in smaller diamonds using
magnification... The pattern of eight stars may be seen easier using an
instrument called a Gems Fantasy Scope which encompasses a small magnifying lens
and a colored piece of filament paper that serves to diffuse the light and
enhance the appearance of the pattern. If you think this concept is cool,
you should check out our Hearts & Arrows
diamonds which exhibit not only a pattern of eight stars, but a symmetrical
pattern of eight hearts as well... Where do the hearts come from?
See that upside down kite shape facet in the middle of the top of the
stone? That's a bezel main and when viewed from the bottom of the stone
through a Gems Fantasy Scope, certain diamonds cut to very precise proportions
will exhibit the pattern of eight hearts...
