Can you re-cut my diamond?

I have a pear shape diamond weighing 2.00 carats that I inherited from my grandmother and would really prefer a round.  Can you re-cut my pear shape diamond into a round brilliant ideal cut diamond like the ones you describe on your web site?

The easy answer is no, but we'll explain why.  First of all, we're not diamond cutters, we're diamond brokers.  We do not cut diamonds., we sell diamonds which have already been cut to very precise parameters that are difficult for the cutters to achieve from a piece of diamond rough without the additional challenge of trying to change the shape that it has already been cut to and deal with any potential durability issues that may exist in the finished diamond as a result of the current structure.

Of course, re-cutting can generally almost be done.  In some cases, the crystal structure of the stone might pose a risk and it would be adviseable not to touch the diamond.  Keep in mind that the re-cutting process would be so extensive to change the shape of a diamond from pear shape to round that it would not be worth the risk and expense of doing so - the yield would be quite small in comparison to the amount of diamond material that would be lost.  This is of course assuming that the crystal structure and inclusions within the diamond allowed it to even be a candidate to be re-cut.  Realize that the only portion of a pear shape diamond that could possibly yield itself to conversion to a round brilliant would be the body section of the end which is already rounded, all of the weight in the tip section would be lost.

It is a little easier and more beneficial to re-cut a round brilliant cut diamond with very good proportions to the tighter spectrum of zero ideal cut proportions.  However the economic considerations of re-cutting the diamond still exist and must be taken into consideration.  The loss of diamond material during the cutting process can be as much as 50 - 60% on a good day, we see little point to re-cut a two carat diamond down to something smaller just to improve proportions.  It makes more sense to us from a financial perspective for you to sell the existing diamond off to somebody who can appreciate it in its current form and then take the money earned from the sale and apply it to a diamond which is already cut to the proportions you desire within the scope of characteristics that you are willing to consider.
